It’s simple. When something loses hydration, it shrivels up, dries out, and stops functioning the way it should.

Your body is no different.

The Client Who Thought Lip Balm Was the Answer

A while ago, I had a client who always had dry skin and cracked lips. She carried lip balm everywhere and was constantly applying moisturiser.

But no matter how much she used, nothing seemed to fix it.

One day, I asked her, "How much water do you drink?"

Her answer? "Not much. Maybe a glass or two a day."

That was the real issue. Hydration starts from the inside.

No amount of lip balm or lotion will fix dehydration if your body isn’t getting enough water in the first place.

How Much Water Do You Actually Need?

Most people don’t drink enough, but how much is the right amount?

A simple way to calculate your daily water intake:

  • Metric system: Body weight (kg) × 35 = millilitres of water per day

  • Imperial system: Body weight (lbs) × 0.556 = ounces of water per day

For example, if you weigh 70kg, you should aim for about 2.45 litres per day.

If you train, sweat a lot, or live in a hot climate, you’ll need more.

At OC Health Clubs (our gym here in Queenstown), we’ll often see members training hard, eating well, and doing all the right things, yet still feeling a little off. And more often than not, a simple lack of hydration plays a role.

Drinking water isn’t just about avoiding dry skin—it’s about energy, digestion, recovery, and performance.

The Bottom Line

Before you reach for another tube of lip balm or expensive moisturiser, ask yourself: Am I actually hydrated?

Because the fastest way to go from feeling like a prune to feeling like a grape isn’t in a bottle of lotion—it’s in your water bottle.
