4. Disconnect to Reconnect – The Social Health Shift

READ Time - 3 minutes

Are Our Phones Keeping Us Disconnected?

We live in a world where we’re more "connected" than ever—but somehow, we feel more disconnected than ever, too.

Everywhere you look, people are glued to their screens. At work, at home, at the dinner table, and yes—at the gym. Messages, notifications, endless scrolling. It’s become second nature.

But here’s the thing: when you bring your phone into a training session, you’re not just bringing a device. You’re bringing every stress, every email, every distraction with you.

That’s why at OC (our gym here in Queenstown), phones stay off the gym floor. For one hour, it’s just you, your training, and the people around you.

The Gym Should Be an Escape, Not Another Stressor

People come to the gym to get away from it all—to move, to breathe, to reset.

But if you’re answering emails between sets, checking social media, or scrolling through notifications, are you really escaping? Or are you just bringing your outside world into the space meant for your well-being?

The best part of training? It’s one of the few times in the day where you can be fully present.

Social Health – Connecting With People, Not Screens

We often talk about physical health and mental health, but social health is just as important.

Real connection doesn’t happen through a screen. It happens when you look up, when you talk to the person next to you, when you push through a tough workout together, when you have a laugh in the gym.

That’s what we’re about at OC—real people, real connection, real energy.

And you don’t realise how much you’ve been missing it until you put your phone away and actually experience it.

The Bottom Line

Your phone will still be there after your session.

But the chance to be fully present, to connect with others, and to train without distractions? That’s something special.

So next time you step into the gym, challenge yourself: leave the phone behind, look up, and be part of something real.

See You Next Friday

Your future self will thank you for choosing presence over distraction.
